Marriage and family are natural institutions established by God, founded on the ontic structure of the human being as male and female, with a natural inclination towards conjugal union. According to classics like Aristotle and Saint Thomas, marriage is a permanent natural association oriented towards procreation, the education of children and mutual help between spouses. The family constitutes a pre-existing reality to legal norms, being the foundation of all society and fulfilling essential functions such as the transmission of values and social continuity. Conjugal love necessarily integrates the procreative dimension, since truly loving implies loving the potential motherhood and fatherhood of the spouse. The modern transformation of these institutions through legislation such as divorce and same-sex marriage threatens their essential nature and, consequently, social stability.
